Grant & Loan Awards: Jenkins County

Jenkins County

Equity Fund: $500,000

Awarded: 12/15/2010

Applicant: Jenkins County DA

Equity grant funds of $500,000 will be used to assist with the renovation of a Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building to serve as the Camp Lawton Museum and Interpretive Center at Magnolia Springs State Park in Jenkins County. Magnolia Springs State Park is home to the recently discovered 42-acre compound framed by a 15-foot high stockade wall of locally harvested pine logs and described in 1864 as “the largest prison in the world.” Georgia Southern University, in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began to investigate the archeology at Camp Lawton in 2009. Recent archeological discoveries of a stockade wall and numerous personal articles from the soldiers at Camp Lawton have brought national attention to the site. The community hopes to attract the countless number of visitors who frequent Civil War history sites.

Total Budgeted Project Cost: $545,000
