Grant & Loan Awards: Decatur County
Equity grant funds of $400,678 will be used to assist with water system and road infrastructure improvements in support of Meredian, LLC, a biopolymer company located in the Decatur County Industrial Park, as well as other potential industries looking to locate in the 185,000 SF (former American Fibers and Yarns) manufacturing facility which was acquired by the DA in 2009. Meredian’s parent company is Danimer Scientific, founded by Dr. Daniel Carraway, PhD in biotechnology and the holder of 20+ patents. Construction of an access road to the manufacturing facility and connection to the public water system are essential elements for effectively using the facility for multiple industries. Meredian, LLC is a Decatur County based company which produces resins used in the manufacture of a wide variety of biodegradable products such as trash bags, hay bale wraps, and landscaping fabrics.
Equity funds for the construction of public water, sewer and rail that will serve Phase II of Commodore Industrial Park with approximately 140 acres. Improvements include 8â€ water lines, sewer pump station, 4â€ force main, rail spur and an access road through the center connecting SR 253 to the south and Butler Ferry Road to the north. Southwest Georgia Oil Companyâ€™s (dba INLAND) new 10 million gallon biodiesel refinery is the anchor tenant in this Phase of the Park. The refinery represents increased vertical integration of company strengths into the innovative and rapidly growing alternative fuels market. Southwest Georgia Oil Company is a locally owned and operated Bainbridge company established in 1959 and a regional employer with 275 jobs. INLAND has invested over $5.7 million in construction and start-up costs and expects to create 18 jobs.
Equity funds to assist with the development of a regional comprehensive marketing/tourism plan to effectively position the Hwy 27 corridor and the associated 18 counties as a travel and tourism â€œdestination of choice.â€ The Hwy 27 Association was formed to promote economic development, tourism and the protection of cultural and scenic resources along US Hwy 27, which runs 352 miles along the western portion of the State. The Association's 18 member counties seek to build on their existing tourism industry and develop additional products. The group has provided $52,000 of in-kind work/investment to-date, and they recognize the value of developing key partnerships and alliances. EDGE funds to assist with infrastructure improvements (water, sewer, roads) to support the location of TRACO to Bainbridge and Decatur County. TRACO is a leading manufacturer of windows and doors. Founded in 1943, the Company offers building products for the residential, commercial, retail and corporate industries. The Company has manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida and Iowa. The Bainbridge facility, an 80,000 SF speculative building, is situated on 28 acres in the Decatur County Industrial Park. TRACO plans to expand the building to 178,000 SF and add approximately 17,000 SF of office space. This project is in competition with Florida and Alabama.
ESB loan guarantee to purchase seven acres of land and a commercial building in the start-up of Deep South Tire and Brake, a commercial tire retailer located in Climax. The company will sell, repair and replace commercial tires. The lender is United National Bank of Cairo.
Equity funds to support the extension of a rail spur into the 700-acre Commodore Decatur Industrial Park, providing stability for an existing industry. Rail access will assist in the retention of 14 jobs and the creation of three new jobs at Georgia Gulf Sulphur. In addition, providing rail access will enhance the marketing strategy for the undeveloped tracts of the Park.
Equity funds to assist with the construction of an Air Terminal at the Decatur County Regional Airport. The airport and adjoining Industrial Air Park, are seen as cornerstones of economic development in the area, with over 1900 people working at various businesses and industries located in the Park. A modern, up-to-date, well staffed terminal facility is seen as an important component of their economic development efforts. Two full time jobs will be created.
Equity funds for the construction of a full-service marina on Lake Seminole at Bainbridge. The marina will enhance the $21.5 million annual impact of Lake Seminole on the regional economy and is a necessary support facility for existing riverfront recreation and tourism facilities in Bainbridge.
Equity funds to reconstruct the historic Bon Air Hotel's front portico and balconies, helping to further revitalize the city's downtown area.
