Honda Precision Parts of Georgia, LLC

In August 2005, the Tallapoosa Development Authority in Haralson County was awarded a $3,000,000 EDGE grant for land acquisition costs in support of Honda Precision Parts of Georgia, LLC (HPPG), a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company. The 495-acre site, with easy access to I-20, is located along the last exit in Georgia.

Honda Motor Company was started in 1944 and is based in Tokyo, Japan. Honda is one of the largest automobile and consumer durable manufacturers in the world and is the second largest automobile manufacturer in Japan in terms of annual sales, trailing only Toyota. Honda car models include the Accord, CR-V, Civic, Element, Passport; its luxury auto brand, the Acura; and its gasoline-electric hybrid, the Insight. It is also the largest motorcycle producer in the world that includes everything from scooters to superbikes. Honda also has a power products division that produces commercial and residential use machinery. Power products include lawn mowers, snow blowers, portable generators and outboard motors.

The newly built transmission manufacturing plant began assembly of automatic transmissions for Honda Pilot SUVs and Odyssey minivans on May 1, 2006, and supports operations at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, LLC. The 250,000 SF Tallapoosa, Georgia, plant produces state-of-the-art transmissions utilizing the latest technologies in aluminum high pressure die casting, modular machining and precision assembly. As of January 2008 the daily production is at 1,300 units per day of Automatic Transmissions. In-house production includes melting aluminum ingot, high-pressure die-casting, machining and assembly, as well as an on site warehouse for receiving and delivery of component parts to assembly. A third party company manages the operations in the warehouse which employs an additional 62 associates working at the Honda facility. As of January 2008 437 associates are employed to support the daily production and operations. Additionally there are 32 North American and 16 Japanese associates and their families who have relocated from other Honda plants to help start up and train the new associates in Georgia. Total employment including warehouse operations is 547 associates. The Georgia Honda facility is the 13th major plant in North America

The Honda total investment including land, site preparation, building and equipment to date is $174.7M making the total project cost along with the OneGeorgia grant and other local investment $181,523,881.

Tallapoosa City Manager, Philip Eidson, said, “With the support and award of EDGE funds of $3,000,000 from OneGeorgia for the purchase of 459 acres, the City of Tallapoosa was able to close the deal with Honda.”
